FORD MUSTANG
MACH E RALLY
This is going to be a highly controversial statement for someone who works around classic cars to make, but…one of my
favourite cars to drive recently has been the Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally.
Obviously, there’s no loud V8, no smell of petrol as you push the accelerator down to the floor, but there is a lot of speed,
power, and comfort that can pretty much perform equally as well on the road or on the dirt.
The full-electric Mach-E Rally isn’t about copying the typical Mustang character; it’s more about taking an iconic car and
making it do what it does so well, but somewhere it doesn’t usually do it. In this instance, it’s taking a muscle car and
putting it into a rally situation.
Based On The GT
The Mach-E Rally is based on the GT version. The GT is the performance-focused model in the range, so it already has
some big numbers. However, the Rally version makes nearly 500BHP, and almost 1000Nm of torque, and has a 0 – 62mph
time of 3.6 seconds. As it’s an EV too, it delivers all of its power pretty much immediately after you ask for it.
Ford quotes up to 316 miles of range depending on conditions and usage. Charging is fairly quick, too. A rapid charger will
get you from 10% to 80% in around half an hour. Clearly, not as fast as refuelling an ICE car, but still, not bad for an EV that
you can use as a daily, but also have a huge amount of fun with.
Mustang Mach-E Rally
Nick and I recently got to drive the Mach-E Rally on the hill route at UTAC Millbrook. We took a few cars on the same route,
and we both agreed that, on this route at least, it was the one we enjoyed the most. It came down to the instant power.
As the hill route is bendy and gains elevation as you go, there’s not a huge amount of time to build up speed. The Rally
version doesn’t need time to build up speed, though, so it was incredibly fun to see how fast we could make it to the top of
the route (while maintaining the 55mph speed limit).
The Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally has Ford’s first-ever RallySport Drive Mode along with a unique rally suspension setup.
Both of us first noticed the gloss-white 19″ wheels, rear spoiler, and rally sports seats. If you think an EV can’t look cool, look
at this and then see what you think.
